In addition to educational resources and financial incentives, the SLP partners provide technical assistance in the form of site inspections, base plan development and professional design coaching, with services varying depending on the provider.
Technical assistance is an important part of the Water Authority’s WaterSmart Landscape Makeover Series. Participants in this series commit to upgrading an existing turf area with a WaterSmart landscape by attending all four classes, which includes free, one-hour design coaching.
Prior to the first class, each participant receives a free professional site inspection, an as-built base plan and an LID or stormwater management plan to scale for the specific turf area to be converted. Throughout the course, participants refer to and use these plans to develop their final design, irrigation and planting plans. The free professional design coaching gives participants a chance to interact with local landscape architects and other professionals help to troubleshoot and refine their plans.
Free on-site garden coaching by Garden Gurus is offered by the County of San Diego and the Surfrider Foundation. Garden Gurus coach participants in making changes to their watershed-wise landscape. They can answer questions about capturing rainwater, turf removal, climate-appropriate plants, the estate lawn, edibles, and irrigation
Before requesting an appointment, remember that Garden Gurus are not landscape contractors or laborers, and they do not provide customized landscape designs.
